Abstract

Across the United States, there is growing recognition of the need to promote the mental well-being of children and adolescents (New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, 2003). Approximately one-third of children and adolescents will experience a diagnosable mental health disorder in their lifetime; however, 75–80% of these children do not receive appropriate interventions (Department of Health and Human Services, 1999, 2000; Pelosi, 1996). Time trend analysis reveals that the prevalence of mental health disorders among youth is not improving (Fombonee, 1994; Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1991; Rutter, 1994), causing researchers to examine the contributing factors to these mental health problems and how to prevent them.
