History of HIV in India

AIDS in Asia

Abstract

Communicable diseases have been major public health problems in India for centuries. As the population increased, morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases assumed sizable and noticeable proportions. In the first half of the early part of the 20th century, the approach to their management and control was through public health. There have been outbreaks of infectious diseases like cholera, plague, Japanese encephalitis, Dengue fever, jaundice due to Hepatitis viruses, filariasis, malaria, and typhoid. Tuberculosis and leprosy had been endemic in many parts of India. However, there was a good infrastructure for health services, which included personnel from the army medical services, medical college staff, public health staff and some research organizations. There were appropriate control programs for each of the major communicable diseases. Realizing the importance of research, the Indian Research Fund Association was established in 1911, which formed the seed for the current research body, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The inputs of this body helped to a considerable extent in the formulation of appropriate control measures for infectious diseases.
