Abstract

HIV-1 strains in the pandemic are genetically diverse. Nine subtypes (A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J, and K) and 15 circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) have been identified to date (Kuiken et al., 2002). Figure 1 shows a phylogenetic tree of representative full-genome sequences of all of these forms, illustrating the genetic complexity of this important pathogen.
