Abstract
Water scarcity is rapidly becoming critical in coastal areas, arid/semi-arid regions, and island countries around the world. The availability of seawater and brackish water resources and evolving desalination technologies provide significant opportunities to meet water demand. Furthermore, the rapidly evolving energy conservation techniques and emerging renewable energy technologies support the implementation of environmentally sustainable desalination infrastructure networks for densely populated coastal urban and other living environments. This chapter presents an overview of the basic aspects of desalination system components and critical aspects of the decision-making process regarding desalination plant implementation.
