Elastic instabilities in crystal growth

Abstract

This article is a short introduction to instabilities arising from elasticity in crystal growth. A simple description of the basic mechanisms is presented without mathematical details. Special attention is given to growth by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of a crystal limited by a singular surface or a surface with an orientation close to a singular one. It is found that instabilities which take place in the absence of growth do not always occur in the growth regime.
