Abstract
Fresh material is most suitable for microscopical preparation. For transportation and final storage, thick-walled plastic bags are best. Carefully washed plants, or plant parts, may be conserved for a long time in ethanol (40%) or any commercial alcohol, such as whisky or vodka, in thick, sealed plastic bags. Collections of bags with alcohol-soaked samples must be stored in plastic boxes to avoid alcohol evaporation. The etiquettes are labeled with a soft pencil (not alcohol-soluble) and contain the following details (13.1): Latin name, plant part (rhizome, primary root, shoot, transition etc.), life form, phenological plant stage, stem deformation (if any), site conditions e.g. vegetation zone, dry slope, beech forest, grazed etc., locality, region, country, altitude, collecting date.
