Abstract

The law of conservation of momentum, or the equation of motion, is derived for drift ice in this chapter from Newton’s second law for a continuum. By integrating through the thickness of ice, the two-dimensional equations can be obtained. Atmospheric and oceanic forcing is treated in Section 5.2. Scale analysis and dimensional analysis are studied in Section 5.3 to derive the magnitudes of the terms of the momentum equation and the key dimensionless quantities. Section 5.4 concerns the dynamics of a single ice floe based on rigid body mechanics.
