Unified Theories of Elementary Particles

Abstract

In contrast to the common ‘Additive Unification’ schemes, like GUTS etc., a ‘Radical Unification’ scheme — originally suggested by Heisenberg — is adovcated where the fundamental symmetry group and the number of fundamental local fields is required to be minimal: The apparent higher symmetries and the larger number of phenomenological local fields here are effectively generated by the dynamics. In this context a U(1) ⊗ SU(2,loc) invariant theory is considered which is based solely on a single 2×2 component isospinor-spinor field (‘urfield’).
