17.5 Conclusion

The results obtained on the grass layer dynamics and grass demography in Lamto indicate that the former homogenous green slime view of the grass layer, used in primary production and ecophysiological studies, is not applicable to demographic and genetic processes. From these points of view, the grass layer appears at least as structured as the tree layer: very complex spatial patterns at the species level and very strong genetic differenciation in spite of a dominance of clonal reproduction. First estimates of demographic parameters suggest that the main grass species are long lived, probably as long as trees. All these results will form the basis of a more systematic study of the demographic aspects of the grass layer in the future.
