Performance Measurement

  • Chapter
Virtual Organizations

Abstract

Performance Measurement has become an important management support for any kind of organisation in recent years. Companies use performance indicators not only to measure their own performance, but also the performance of their business partners. So far, new forms of collaborative organisations have not been considered in the performance measurement systems and benchmarking initiatives. Therefore, performance measurement of VO is a young emerging research area. On one hand, the performance indicators of traditional organisational forms can also be applied for VOs, but they miss the advantages, which VOs offer to enrich business opportunities of nowadays companies. Hence, new performance measurement systems need to be developed, which consider e.g. enhanced capabilities of organisations. On the other hand, the comparison of performances of goal oriented networks and traditional forms of organisation in benchmarking studies can help promoting the concepts of VO, if the performance measurements are well chosen. This chapter describes the traditional benchmarking approach. It discusses its restrictions and suggests an alternative benchmarking approach, which is more suitable for today’s need of flexible adaptation of organisations towards market requirements. Furthermore, it discusses issues in setting up performance measurement systems.
