Abstract
The food web of the Namib desert has been studied in the vicinity of the Namib desert research station at Gobabeb (South west Africa) during February to April 1964.
The most striking fact is the absolute lack of producers in the bare dunes which contain a very specialized endemic fauna. The necessary food is blown by the wind to the dunes and there covered by sand. The daily winds expose parts of this matter which severs as food for the detritivorous beetles, some termites and Thysanura. Many of the carnivores do not depend directly upon the detritivores but upon animals which are blown by wind or which actively fly to the dunes.
