Abstract

This is a review of the major advancements in monitoring techniques and strategies used in the management of diabetes mellitus. The major contributions comprise

  1. 1)

    the reagent strip methodology for self-monitoring of glucose in blood and urine,

  2. 2)

    the measurement of hemoglobin glycosylation for the quantitative assessment of long-term glycemia,

  3. 3)

    the C-peptide assay for the evaluation of residual pancreatic function, and

  4. 4)

    the development of clinical laboratory methods to detect an early abnormality of renal function.
