Daunomycin (Daunorubicin) and Adriamycin and Structural Analogues: Biological Activity and Mechanism of Action

  • Chapter
Mechanism of Action of Antimicrobial and Antitumor Agents

Part of the book series: Antibiotics ((ANTIBIOTICS,volume 3))

Abstract

Daunomycin (NSC-82151) is an antibiotic isolated from cultures of Streptomyces peucetius (DiMarco et al. 1963; DiMarco et al., 1964b). While weakly active against some microorganisms, the drug inhibits the multiplication of bacterial and animal viruses and exhibits a high cytotoxic activity against normal and neoplastic cells (Di Marco et al., 1964a).
