Abstract

Three chemically related cancerostatic antibiotics — chromomycin (toyomycin), olivomycin and mithramycin — have been studied in some detail in recent years. Chromomycin was isolated in Japan, olivomycin in the U.S.S.R. and mithramycin in the United States. The structure of molecules in these antibiotics is similar, but not identical; there are also some differences in the toxicity and pharmacology of these products, which have been compared in a recent review (Gause, 1965). Biochemical mechanisms of action of these antibiotics have much in common.
