Edible Ectomycorrhizal Mushrooms

Part of the book series: Soil Biology ((SOILBIOL,volume 34))

Abstract

The cultivation of mycorrhizal mushrooms and truffles as a multidisciplinary science is at an interesting stage of development. Genomic studies combined with biotechnological advances in tree and fungal micropropogation are propelling the field forward. Two genomes of ectomycorrhizal (EM) species have already been published, and genomes of another 30 have been scheduled for sequencing. Still the pace of genome sequencing is increasing logarithmically as new technologies for high-throughput DNA sequencing are developed. Parallel advances have been made in transcriptomics, proteomics, and computational biology. Although the full impact of these endeavors may not be realized for years or perhaps decades, new suites of molecular and bioinformatic tools for investigating the EM biology, development, and evolution are already emerging and leading to new insights and paradigms on EM symbiosis.
