Kein Kapitel auf dem Gebiet der gastroenterologischen Erkrankungen erfuhr in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten das Privileg, so grundlegend neu geschrieben werden zu dürfen, wie das zur Gastritis und zur peptischen Ulkuskrankheit. Die Entdeckung von Helicobacter pylori, der medizinischen Fachwelt erstmals 1983 zugänglich gemacht, hat innerhalb nur weniger Jahre zu wesentlichen neuen Erkenntnissen geführt, sodass bereits 1990 ein neues System der Gastritisklassifikation (Sydney-System) zur verbindlichen Empfehlung für den klinischen Pathologen und Gastroenterologen vorgestellt wurde. Diese Einteilung stellt die Grundlage für eine ursachenorientierte spezifische Klassifikation und Therapie der Gastritis dar. Allerdings müssen für die Therapieentscheidung bei Gastritis auch die begleitenden klinischen Manifestationen neu miteinbezogen werden.
