Bioactive Dietary Factors and Plant Extracts in Dermatology

Abstract

From the dawn of the historic era, man has been using mulathi (licorice). The plant is widely distributed in the subtropical and warm temperate regions like Mediterranean and Asian countries. Licorice extracts have been used for more than 60 years in Japan to treat chronic hepatitis, and also have therapeutic benefit against other viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus, cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex. Glycyrrhiza glabra has found to be for the treatment of atopic dermatitis and associated signs. Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin caused by exposure to a particular substance. It is characterized by mild reddening of skin, itching, burning, blistering, or darkening of skin. The present chapter deals with the usage of licorice and its phytoconstituents for the management of dermatitis.
