Advances in Understanding the Microbiological Degradation of Lignin

  • Chapter
The Structure, Biosynthesis, and Degradation of Wood

Part of the book series: Recent Advances in Phytochemistry ((RAPT,volume 11))

Abstract

From the earlier chapters the reader can gain an up-to-date concept of the chemical and physical structure of lignocellulosic cell walls, and the biosynthesis of their structural components. About half of the earth’s carbon that is fixed annually via photosynthetic reactions is incorporated into these constituents.3 The carbon, of course, does not remain fixed, but is released ultimately as volatile products to complete the carbon cycle that is central to life. The carbon is released primarily as CO2 by the activities of microorganisms.
