Abstract

The University of Wisconsin Statistics Department was founded in 1960 by George Box, although its origins are much earlier. Throughout these 50 years, the department has been committed to a balance of theory and practice of statistics, and has been engaged in research endeavors across many disciplines. This document relates some of the early developments and how the composition of the department has evolved.
