A Double Blind Comparison of Pirlindole with Amitriptyline and Imipramine

Summary

Comparisons of the efficacy of the antidepressants pirlindole¹ and amitriptyline, and of pirlindole and imipramine were performed in two controlled, randomised, double-blind 2-centre studies in 80 depressed in-patients each. With regard to the therapeutic efficacy in depressive syndromes of nosologically different classification, no relevant and statistically significant differences were observed either in the comparison of amitripytline versus pirlindole nor in that between imipramine and pirlindole. In both studies, no intolerance phenomena, no relevant side effects, or abnormal laboratory parameters were seen under pirlindole, amitriptyline or imipramine.
