Symmetry and asymmetry in endoskeleton development in tetrapod-like limbs

Abstract

The general morphogenesis of paired limbs of sarcopterygians (dipnoans, crossopterygians) and the earliest tetrapods developed in the Paleozoic and had a great latent potency realized in parallel at different developmental stages of these groups irrespective of their phylogenetic status. The symmetry is reduced to the general developmental pattern and should be regarded as stabilization of a certain morphogenetic process, while asymmetry is disturbance of this process, which often results in innovations particularly prominently manifested in diversity and modifications in the developmental pattern of the endoskeleton in caudates.
