Abstract

Hydrothermal metasomatism greatly enriched kimberlites of the Nyurbinskaya Pipe, East Siberia, in secondary quartz. We have calculated normative secondary quartz values (Q) for each of 1035 X-ray fluorescence analyses for rock-forming oxides. The results are correlated with 437 diamond test intervals. A description of full diamond fraction composition is provided for each test interval. Eleven groups are recognized on the base of Q distribution, from dolomitic rocks with negative Q values to substantially quartzose rocks. Diamond potentials and crystal weights decrease with increasing Q values. We conclude that diamonds are dissolved during hydrothermal metasomatism.
