Abstract
THE Last Glacial Maximum is observed to have occurred between 18,000 and 20,000 years ago throughout northern Europe. Here we present evidence for the surprising result that in the region of the French Vosges, the regional ice sheet advanced during the early part of the last glacial cycle, and this expansion was considerably larger than that which occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum. From these results, we conclude that the glacial maximum may not have occurred at the same time worldwide, contrary to what has usually been assumed1.
