Abstract

MANY important activities have been ascribed to fibronectin, which is found in soluble form in many biological fluids and in insoluble form on the surface of fibroblasts1–3. Fibronectin mediates the attachment of fibroblasts and hepatocytes to culture dishes4–6 and, when solubilised from the fibroblast surface, it binds to the surface of cultured transformed fibroblasts, restoring their morphology to normal7,8. I now report that the affinity of fibronectin to cell surfaces extends to the prokaryotic cell Staphylococcus aureus.
