Long-range transport of tropospheric ozone

Abstract

Models of ozone and other oxidants are suggested for episodes where air masses of continental origin reach the British Isles during fair weather in summer. It is shown that ozone stays at high levels for several days, allowing for transport over long distances (∼ 1,000 km). Ozone exhibits pronounced diurnal variation in air masses continuously mixed with precursor emissions, while the ozone level is almost constant in ageing air masses due to the rapid drop in NOX.
