Abstract
INTEREST in the composition of Nigerian ‘bronzes’ began in 1897, the year of the British punitive expedition to the city of Benin, when Nigerian metal art was brought to the attention of the western world as a spoil of war. In spite of the dissemination of much of this art to museums, and the subsequent focus of research, important questions concerning the chronological ordering of the pieces and relationships among forms and iconographies remain unanswered.
