Changes in Vp/VS before the Tokachi-oki earthquake of May 16, 1968 off NE Japan

Abstract

THE detection of premonitory variations in the ratio of compressional to shear wave velocities is one of the most promising tools for earthquake prediction1,2. Changes in VP/VS for some moderate sized earthquakes (M ≊ 5–6) located on Japanese islands have been found3,4, and for shallow, small to moderate sized earthquakes (M < 7) located on continents. For large submarine earthquakes (M ≊ 8), however, velocity changes have not previously been reported.
