Heteroduplex and homoduplex DNA molecules of bacteriophage SPP1 were treated with DNase I, an enzyme of Ustilago maydis implicated in genetic recombination. A transfection assay with Bacillus subtilis demonstrates that the heteroduplexes are preferentially inactivated.
