Abstract

HISTAMINE receptors mediating changes in gastric secretion are resistant to blockade by most antihistamines1, and this led Ash and Schild2 to propose two classes of receptors, H1 typified by the system in guinea pig ileum or bronchi, and H2 responsible for effects on atria and gastric secretion. This concept is supported by the demonstration that, in contrast to most antihistamines, a series of substituted imidazole compounds are competitive antagonists of the H2 receptor with negligible action on H1 (refs 3, 4).
