Abstract

MITOTIC division in Physarum polycephalum is preceded by a marked increase in the phosphate content of very lysine-rich histone (Pp. F1) (ref. 1) due to phosphorylation of serine residues probably at specific points in the amino acid sequence2,3. The phosphate content of F1 histone has been measured by a number of groups under a variety of conditions in an attempt to understand the role of F1 phosphorylation and three facts have been established.
