Abstract

NOT only viral and syngeneic polynucleotides but also bacterial endotoxins, PHA (refs 1 and 2), heterologous and, in certain cases, homologous gammaglobuliris can induce interferon3–5. The question arises whether or not antigenicity correlates with interferonogehic properties. We therefore studied the interferonogenic properties of syngeneic and allogeneic living or irradiated mouse spleen cells (SC), xenogeneic and allogeneic erythrocytes and syngeneic materials (erythrocytes and sera) that had become autoantigenic after treatment with trypsin, iodination or heating.
