Abstract

Volume estimates and age dating of basic, non-orogenic igneous deposits suggest synchronous discharge from many hot spots, identified as mantle plumes. The discharge fluctuations seem to mirror the histories of diverse global geological parameters. Extinction crisis of faunal evolution may reflect trace-element pollution occurring during intervals of intense vulcanism reflecting active plume convection.
