Abstract

THE effects of certain drugs are sufficiently strong and distinctive for animals to learn differential responses solely on the basis of whether they are in the drug or control condition1. Tests with lower doses of the same drug can establish the threshold for this discriminative response, and tests with other compounds can be used to determine the similarity or dissimilarity of their subjective effects. We have used this method for characterizing the pharmacological actions of Δ1-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ1-THC), which is reported to be the major psychoactive constituent of marihuana2–3.
