Abstract

WE have found that a significant percentage of bursectomized irradiated chickens develop a severe anaemia. White leghorn chickens (DeKalb strain 161) were surgically bursectomized when they hatched and given 600 r. of X-irradiation as previously described1. Control animals received X-irradiation only. The animals were housed in conventional animal quarters and given free access to water and food. At 8 weeks of age heparinized blood samples were collected from a wing vein, and red and white blood cells were counted using the Natt–Herrick stain2. Blood smears were prepared and stained with Wright–Giemsa stain, and were examined for the presence of immature erythrocyte forms. Further, the number of lymphocytes per microscopic high power visual field was determined. The haemoglobin concentrations and the haematocrits of the blood samples were determined. The Coombs direct test10 was performed on the blood samples, using a rabbit antiserum raised against chicken IgG as antiglobulin reagent.
