Abstract
THE isolation of strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, highly resistant to carbenicillin, has been reported by Lowbury et al.1, although there seems to be no evidence to relate the existence of these strains to the clinical use of carbenicillin. Here we report that two of the carbenicillin-resistant strains isolated (1822 and 3425) produce a β-lactamase similar to R-factor mediated β-lactamase of Escherichia coli strains and dissimilar from typical Ps. aeruginosa β-lactamase. We have also shown that this resistance factor is transmissible from Ps. aeruginosa 1822 and 3245 to E. coli K12.
