Evidence of Crossbridge Movement during Contraction of Insect Flight Muscle

Abstract

THE myosin crossbridges which project from the thick filaments of striated muscle are known to bend and attach to the thin filaments in the absence of their enzymatic substrate, ATP1. Huxley and Brown have produced evidence that crossbridges are displaced during tetanic contraction of frog sartorius muscle2. We have sought evidence of such motion during the oscillatory contraction of insect fibrillar flight muscle.
