Abstract

EMBRYONIC mouse mandibles contain a variety of epithelial and connective tissue elements. These include the stratified squamous epithelia of skin and gingiva and the dental epithelia of the developing teeth, the connective tissues of skin, gingiva and the developing dental pulp, bone, dentine and cartilage. Nerve and muscle are also present. The in vitro culture of such an organ on a chemically defined medium would provide a system in which the effects of specific substances on different epithelia and connective tissues, and on the interactions occurring between these tissues, could be examined in controlled conditions.
