Abstract

THE course of P. berghei infections in the rat has been described many times1–4. Young rats, up to about 8 weeks old, usually die with a fulminating acute parasitaemia and severe anaemia. On the other hand, most adult rats develop immunity and almost completely clear the blood stream of parasites soon after the peak parasitaemia. The serum of rats which have recovered contains protective antibodies5,6, but parasites are still detectable by subinoculation of blood for several weeks after the acute parasitaemia. This phase of chronic infection is eventually followed by sterile immunity4.
