Abstract

DURING a study of the grouping behaviour of immature adults of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, it became obvious that it was impossible, in laboratory conditions of the Anti-Locust Research Centre (ALRC), to produce adult locusts which were behaviourally and otherwise solitary. Locusts are considered to be solitary when they lack the tendency to form the large, dense groups typical of the gregarious phase and exhibit fully the morphometric characteristics of individuals living in isolation in the field.
