Radiosensitization of Bacterial and Mammalian Cells by Substituted Glyoxals

Abstract

Methylglyoxal preferentially sensitizes anoxic bacterial and mammalian cells to the lethal effects of ionizing radiation. The radio-protective effect of anoxia on mammalian cells is effectively abolished in the presence of methylglyoxal, whereas sensitization of oxygenated mammalian cells is slight.
