Abstract

FOLLICLE stimulating hormone (FSH) was obtained from powdered human pituitary dried with acetone and purified in two ways: (a) by the method of Amir, Barker, Butt and Crooke1, and (b) by the cellosolve extraction procedure of Butt, Crooke and Wolf2 followed by fractionation on DEAE-‘Sephadex A-50’. Haemagglutination inhibition tests showed that luteinizing hormone (LH) and albumin were present to an extent of less than 1 per cent by weight of protein. FSH obtained by both procedures seems to undergo reversible association and dissociation, as the following experiments show.
