Abstract

CYSTEAMINE (β-mercaptoethylamine) has a considerable radioprotective effect as measured both by survival of lethally irradiated animals1 and by assay of the loss of reproductive integrity of irradiated human cells in tissue culture2. One effect of irradiation is to induce polyploidy in human leucocyte cultures stimulated by phytohaemagglutinin3–5. Cysteamine is one of several sulphydryl compounds which also induce polyploidy in such cultures6,7. This report describes experiments to determine whether the effects of irradiation and cysteamine in combination are competitive or additive.
