Abstract

CERTAIN species of fish are capable of euryhalinity, that is, they can live in both fresh and sea water. We have measured the renin content of the kidney in Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) kept for eleven weeks in both fresh and sea water to determine whether euryhalinity in this species is controlled by the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system. Fig. 1 shows that the renin content was definitely decreased in sea water. The means and standard errors were 7.5 ± 0.77 and 3.8 ± 0.45 (K × 102), respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01).
