Abstract

THE uptake and alteration of oxytetracycline (OTC) has been demonstrated with the ascomycete Xylaria digitata1. So far as we can trace, no reports have been published concerning the fate of this drug in bacteria. Izaki and Arima2,3 have investigated the uptake and accumulation of OTC by Escherichia coli K12. They have reported that large amounts of the antibiotic are retained by the cells, but the chemical nature of the intracellular OTC was not investigated.
