Selective Uptake of an Antibilharzial Nitrothiazole Compound by Schistosoma mansoni

Abstract

REPORTS on the uptake of schistomicidal drugs in the parasite are few and so far have been limited to 124Sb-labelled antimonials1,2. Following the description of a potent nitrothiazole schistosomicide, 1-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)-2-imidazolidinone (Ciba 32,644-Ba)3,4, the distribution of this compound was studied in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The 14C-labelled nitrothiazole was found to be highly concentrated in both adult worms and embryonated eggs.
