Abstract

THE modification of the cardiovascular response to reserpine has been accomplished, by the pretreatment of animals with various pharmacological agents. Thus, the administration of ganglionic blocking agents1, cocaine2, and imipramine3 has resulted in the appearance of a vasopressor response on the intravenous injections of reserpine4. Pretreatment with the irreversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase (MAO) also has resulted in the reversal of the usual hypotensive action of reserpine. In these instances it has been presumed that this modified response was the result of an increased concentration of circulating catecholamines due to their release by reserpine and their protection from destruction by the presence of the MAO inhibitors.
