Abstract

DILUTE alloys of a transitional metal (for example, manganese) in a noble metal (for example, silver) exhibit anomalous properties at low temperatures. Their electrical resistivity in the neighbourhood of liquid hydrogen temperatures shows a minimum, followed by a maximum at a still lower temperature1. They exhibit a large negative (electrical as well as thermal) magneto-resistance2,3. Magnetic susceptibility measurements4 suggest an antiferromagnetic transition with indications of ‘parasitic’ ferromagnetism as well.
