Abstract

SIMILAR antiphlogistic and biochemical effects of salicylate, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol1 have stimulated interest in establishing a possible influence of salicylate on the secretion of adrenocortical hormones in man and experimental animals. Studies in dogs, guinea pigs and rats have shown a stimulatory effect of salicylate on cortisol secretion2. It has been emphasized, however, that these experiments used a dose per unit of body-weight greater than the comparable therapeutic dose in man3,4. Furthermore, an anti-rheumatic effect of salicylate has been demonstrated in a patient whose adrenocortical function had been suppressed by 9-α-fluorohydrocortisone5. In view of this conflicting evidence, the present work was designed to determine whether or not salicylate has a direct stimulatory effect on the adrenal cortex.
