Abstract
SEVERAL investigators have described a goitrogenic effect of various Brassica plants (see Greer's review1). Papers have appeared in recent years dealing with the goitrogenic properties of milk from cows fed on various species of Brassica 2–5. As, however, no goitrogenic substances had until recently been proved in the edible parts of Brassica (except in rutabaga (Brass. napus var. esculenta) and turnip1) quite a number of problems remained unanswered. Recently, Altamura et al. isolated L-5-vinyl-2-thio-oxazolidone also from fresh cabbage6. On the basis of our previous studies5 we decided to study the effect of Brassica and other plants on the thyroid gland of laboratory animals with the aid of newer methods.
