Abstract

THE hypothesis by Bennet-Clark1 that the degree of methyl esterification of the pectic substances of plant cell walls would have a marked effect on the plastic and elastic properties of such walls has directed attention to the role of the pectic substances in auxin-controlled extension growth. Ordin, Cleland and Bonner2 have demonstrated that the methylation rate of pectins in the walls of coleoptiles is increased by auxin, and Tagawa and Bonner3 have shown that the effect of various cations and of auxin on the physical properties of the walls are consistent with Bennet-Clark's hypothesis.
